The Himalayas are a world apart. They are mesmerizing and awe inspiring. Nepal is the popular gateway to the mountains and in such rewards travelers with some of the most spectacular sights of these sacred mountains.
Bhaktapur is locate in the Katmandu valley, and is a sacred place. This Sadhu, or Holy man, was living in this alcove and did teachings during the day. The framing of the portrait and the intensity really drew me in.
Npl-2 Gosaikunda, Nepal, 1994
I took this shot in the frozen lakes of the Gosaikunda area at about 14,000 feet elevation, with the Langtang mountains in the background. This is an amazing place with buckling ice along the lakes creating incredible shapes of color. This image is one of my all time favorites.
Npl-3 Sing Gompa, Nepal, 1994
As part of a 18 day trek through the Himalayas, the basic tea houses were where I stayed for the night. Sing Gompa is one of them, and this was the view near by – a Buddhist stupa with the majestic Himalayas in the background.

The woman working in the tea house where I stayed had this cute boy who kept following her everywhere. With a big band-aid on his bum he crawled up the stair after his mom, and created a great fun and cute image.

My final stop on the Langtang trek took mt to Kyajin Gompa. From there I did a day trek to climb the Tsergo Ri at 15,000 feet. On the way I saw these horses going down to the valley, and it was just an amazing moment in this natural wonderland.
Npl-6 Langtang range, Nepal, 1994
On my way to climb Tsergo Ri at 15,000 feet, from Kyajin Gompa I hiked through the valley where big hairy yaks were grazing. What a place. Incredible adventure.

The porters, Sherpas, really work hard in the trekking business. They can carry up to 80 kilos on their heads. It was incredible to see them run down the trail at this high altitude with a heavy load. I like the symmetry in this image, and the motion.
Npl-8 Dunche, Nepal, 1994
I was finally in Dunche, the last stop on my 18 day trek. I took this shot on the street as a porter was returning from the mountains. The light was incredible and his stoic expression, or just plain tired look, was powerful.
